Every ocean liner has a fixed way of operation. So, when we say statistics, every containers statistics is taken and calculated individually. The nationality of the shipper or the company that owns the liner is not taken into account. Ocean liners are mainly used to transport liquids and bulk products. However, this is only one segment of the ocean freight industry. There are other types of carriers like tramps and tankers that carry liquids and goods. However, these are highly irregular and unscheduled carriers. They mostly travel based on the arrangement between the shipper and the carrier.
The ocean freight index can be broadly classified into inbound and outbound liners. Out bound liners go to many countries, while inbound liners operate within a specific boundary or within the country.
Ocean freight statistics are very important to calculate the gross domestic product of the country. The United States Bureau of Economic Analysis uses the ocean freight index to calculate the shipping costs and payments.
For every ocean liner factors like service route, commodities, container sizes, rate and service charges are calculated individually. The unscheduled vessels are calculated based on the consignment value.
