Most warehousing accidents are caused due to lifting, straining or working at heights without proper safety equipment. However, it has been seen that accidents causing injuries in warehouses can be categorized as follows:
- Injuries due to slipping, tripping and/or falling
- Injuries due to lifting heavy items, reaching out for goods, pulling and/or pushing
- Injuries caused due to dropped boxes and/or forklift accidents.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, around 15,000 injuries take place in the warehousing industry. Although these accidents are not serious, the sheer number means that proper safety measures are not being employed.
That is why it is important for warehouse operators to ensure that they impart training and lay more emphasis on safety. In fact, warehouse operators should hold regular training on safety related issues and ensure that all warehouse workers follow safety best practices. One of the ways that a warehouse can bring down the number of accidents is by forming a safety committee that ensures that safety procedures are followed by each and every employee. This should be one of the first steps towards making sure that safety procedures and best practices are being adhered to.
Usually a safety committee has members from all grades -- floor workers, supervisors and department managers. This way each grade is represented while ensuring that the number of members is kept to workable level. In addition, to avoid warehousing accidents, regular safety meeting should be held so that all safety related issues can be sorted out and the number of accidents is reduced.
