In the future, the need for sourcing and purchasing is only going to increase. There will be an immense need to fully exploit the supply chain principles and the usage of internal and external sources will be high. The sourcing entities can be global and also companies might start exploring several other external options. This also brings about problems with integrity, coordination and even communication. There may be conflicting ideas when the business cycle is presented with too many options.
Strategic planning helps to approach the business cycle in as systematic way so that the options are streamlined and it puts forth a framework for the business using which it can be more flexible. As long as the business sticks to the strategically planned framework, it will not run into any problems. Sourcing is a strategic function and it cannot be done mechanically. A framework from business-to-business for sourcing needs to be put into place as a part of the supply chain. The proliferation of products only puts a company into a situation of multi-sourcing and it can have several problems with communication and delivery. Also, when a company starts sourcing from multiple locations, then the problem of redundancy will arise. Instead if sourcing is strategized in the beginning of the business cycle, several problems can be avoided.
